The Department of Homeland Security’s surveillance capabilities have been boosted now that it has a vessel of its own.

The Mataala or Vigilance was dedicated this morning in a ceremony at the inter-island dock in Fagatogo.

Pastor Papalii Laulii Alofa gave the invocation and Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga gave special remarks. He said the addition of the vessel will help the Department of Homeland Security fulfill its border control mission. He commended the department for acquiring the vessel and wished God’s protection for the crew at all times.

Director of Homeland Security Samana Semo Ve’ave’a said the vessel was funded with two grants at a total cost of $412,131.

The department also acquired three drones at a total cost of $79,862. The drones he said have high photography and mapping capabilities.

Joining ASG directors at the dedication ceremony were Coast Guard officers.
