A memo circulating on social media today saying that the rest of this week will be an ASG holiday and that there will be a rematch of the fautasi race on Saturday, is a fabricated document.

A statement from the Governor’s Office about the fake memo this afternoon said, “The Office of the Governor has become aware of a falsified General Memorandum currently circulating on social media platforms.

“This fabricated document falsely declares the remainder of the week as a holiday and alleges a rematch of the Flag Day fautasi race on Saturday. These claims are not valid.

“To verify the authenticity of any document claiming to be issued by the Office of the Governor, we encourage the public to refer to the American Samoa Government website at https://www.americansamoa.gov/.

“All legitimate General Memorandums are promptly posted on the website under the Press/Media section. The dissemination of false information not only undermines public trust but also causes unnecessary confusion and disruption. We urge all citizens to exercise caution and turn to reliable sources of information when checking the validity of social media posts.”

The fake memo dated April 24 said, “After careful deliberation in consultation with the American Samoa Government, and in recognition of the esteemed lineage of families participating in the time-honored Flag Day Fautasi Race it has been decided that from Wednesday April 24, 2024 to Friday, April 26, 2024, a Flag Day Holiday Week shall be officially declared under the provisions outlined in General Memo 082-24 issued on April 8, 2024.

On Saturday April 27, 2024, in light of instances of miscommunication and documented infractions of race regulations, a decision has been made to organize a rematch for the traditional Flag Day fautasi race. However, it is imperative to note that Nu’uuli’s Manulele Tausala (Lowrider) will henceforth be prohibited from participating in this revered tradition. Furthermore, only police vessels will be permitted to enter the waters ensuring compliance with race rules and regulations.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation for your dedication and service and we urge all participants to revel in the festivities of this significant week alongside friends and family as we commemorate this cherished tradition.”

The fake memo had the signature of Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga.
