Defendant charged in jewelry store burglary & theft

A thirty-three year old man has been charged for allegedly breaking into and stealing $50,000 worth of jewelry from Treasure Island Jewelers at the beginning of this month.

Junior Tino Tui Maluia, also known as Mulu, is charged with second degree burglary, stealing and property damage second degree. He is being held on bail of $5,000.

Court filings said video footage from the jewelry store captured a person wearing a black sweater with a Raiders’ logo and an orange sarong crawling into the jewelry store’s main door and striking the bottom glass with a wooden stick.

The burglar covered his face with a light green cloth.

He entered the store and took jewelry from where they were displayed and mounted then exited through the same point of entry and walked down the hallway.

A security guard identified the person in the video as Mulu, who lives close to the store.

The defendant’s mother also identified him in the video.

The court documents say that during questioning of the defendant, he first denied that he had anything to do with the burglary. But when shown the video footage he asked police if they could go to retrieve what he had taken. He also said that he had given some of the items away.

The defendant then admitted that he had broken into the jewelry store and took several gold and silver jewelry.

He said he gave a friend, Deion 30 to 40 gold and silver chains. He alsio gave some of the loot to other friends.

He claimed he received $23 for one chain.

The stolen jewelry included 47 14-karate gold wedding bands, 37-14 karate gold chains and 6 sterling silver chains, which the owner said had a retail value of over $50,000.

The damages to the glass door and repars was $800.
