In a major push to bolster the local fishing industry, the Fresh Seafood Academy Center is set to open next month. The academy, part of the Super Alia initiative, will provide training on commercial fishing techniques using a fleet of government-owned vessels.

Joe Lum On, a master fisherman from Fiji, who has been selected as the Captain of the first super alia, “Tautai Mua,” will conduct hands-on practical training exercises on the fishing vessel.

Classroom instruction will be conducted at the American Samoa Seafood Academy Center. Topics covered include marine science, rules and regulations, the economics and business side of fisheries development and safety on fishing vessels.

The program aims to provide a sustainable source of fresh fish for the community, while creating new jobs in the local fishing industry. Tony Langkilde of the Department of Commerce encourages those interested to visit their office at the Fagatogo marketplace for more information and applications.
