OIA Asst Secretary Advocates for US Nationals

In her Flag Day address, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs, Lupesinaosamoa Esther Kiaaina mentioned the name of a young woman from Nu’uuli who had interned with her Washington D.C. Office last summer, Fuatino Solaita.

During her OIA internship Fuatino researched under Assistant Secretary Lupesinaosamoa’s guidance why US nationals are not eligible for some federal jobs.

The assistant Secretary called this discriminatory against US nationals.

In the course of their research with the Office of Budget and Personnel Management, she and Fuatino discovered a document that helped their cause.

Despite the Eisenhower memo, the Assistant Secretary says this policy is not being uniformly applied, and even the Department of Interior is guilty of not following Eisenhower’s federal job eligibility rule.
