The President and CEO of StarKist Co., owners of StarKist Samoa, Mr. Andrew Choe, predicts that production at the local cannery will remain in a  state of uncertainty if it doesn’t get additional fish freezer space.

Wrapping up a four day visit to the StarKist plant and the territory Friday, Mr. Choe explained that the recent shutdown at the Satala plant was tied to lack of cold storage.

The president and CEO  says the most urgent need for StarKist Samoa is additional space for a new fish freezer  where it can store all the fish it needs.

Mr Choe said in the past, when boats were calling in regularly, the need for more storage was not critical but with the uncertainty in access to fishing grounds affecting the regularity of vessels delivering their fish to StarKist, the cannery needs to secure space to build more storage capacity.

Otherwise, reductions like the recent cutback In hours will continue.

In a rare move, the StarKist president gave an apology for the reduction in hours.
