A Spanish expert in endangered and invasive species management has arrived to help the Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources get rid of myna birds.
Susana Saavedra Cruz comes to American Samoa from Tahiti where she worked on eradicating the myna bird as well as another invasive species similar to the myna called bulbuls.
Cruz said in 2013 there were more than 5,000 myna birds in American Samoa.
But from what she’s seen since she arrived Monday, it’s possible the myna population has doubled.
The bird expert has a plan for eradicating myna birds in the territory,
