The Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Unit has a new lieutenant at the helm.
Lt, Kevin Patrick Whalen takes over from Lt. Vignette Kalstas who is now with Coast Guard headquarters in Washington D.C.
Lt. Whalen is a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy with an environmental science degree and has worked at the New York and Miami Coast Guard sectors primarily in foreign vessel and domestic fleet examinations as well as investigations to include marine casualties.
He comes to American Samoa from the Miami sector where he was the chief of the domestic vessel branch there.
Lt. Whelan also holds a masters degree in management leadership.
He said when the local post opened he made it his first choice.
