In what is believed to be a first, the new senator for the District of Mauputasi District #6: Lepua, Leloaloa and Aua, has been decided by a draw.
At a meeting of ranking chiefs of the Eastern District today, chiefs of Mauputasi District #6 were unable to reach a consensus on who should take up their senate seat.
Present serving senator, Uti Petelo of Leloaloa, with the backing of chiefs from his village, took the position that Leloaloa should have a full senatorial term because he was serving out the remainder of the term of Faumuina Tagisialii.
However High Chief Tilo Vasaga and chiefs of Aua insisted that it was Aua’s turn to occupy the Senate seat.
Since there was no consensus, Paramount Chief Mauga Tasi Ausega made the unprecedented call to select the new senator by a draw.
The task of drawing the name of the new senator was given to High Chief Mailo of Fagatogo and the winner was Tilo Vasaga of Aua.
Tilo is a military retiree and has been a JROTC instructor.
Also at the same District meeting, held at PC Mauga’s guesthouse in Pago Pago, Alo Dr. Paul Stevenson received a unanimous endorsement to continue as Eastern District Governor.
The selection now goes to Governor Lolo Moliga for endorsement. This would be Alo’s second term as District Governor
