Governor Lolo Moliga has informed Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele of concerns that the federal government has raised about American Samoa using telecommunications systems that are foreign owned.
The two leaders held a meeting Tuesday morning before the Samoa PM returned home after attending the 2017 Flag Day celebration.
Last month, Tuilaepa wrote to Governor Lolo Moliga inviting American Samoa to be part of the Tui Samoa Cable which is to be launched later this year.
The Samoa PM proposed that the territory work with Samoa on the Samoa to American Samoa spur of the cable, which will provide fiber connectivity to Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
Lolo said there’s a lot of information we need from Samoa to make a wise and informed decision.
He said before deciding on the PM’s invitation we need to know the costs and the benefits of the Tui Samoa Cable.
According to the governor the Samoa Prime Minister is now aware of the areas of concern and understands the territory’s need for more information on the new cable.
A source familiar with the discussions says the territory has been given a time frame to make a decision on the Tui Samoa cable.
