Vice Speaker Fetu Fetui Jr. and Swains Rep. Su’a Alexander Eli Jennings, have introduced a resolution acknowledging the tremendous effort by the outgoing US Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Supervisor, Lt. Kevin Patrick Whalen for the safety and environmental well being of the American Samoa port.
The resolution detailed some of the marine incidents which Lt. Whalen responded to while heading the local Coast Guard unit, saving the territory from experiencing disastrous consequences.
Lt. Whalen assumed his position on May 13th, 2017 and ended his term a week ago.
The measure says Lt. Whalen responded to numerous marines casualties in the port of Pago Pago involving a tanker collision, injuries, environmental damage and one death.
He oversaw corrective actions for safety and environmental compliance on approximately 130 vessels improving the safety of the vessel and its crews.
In addition, in tandem with the National Oceanic Atmosphere Administration and in response to the grounding of the No.1 JI HYUN, Lt. Whalen engaged local marine surveyors and environmental agencies to conduct a damage survey and analysis of the grounded fishing vessel.
His actions vastly reduced impact in the National Marine Sanctuary and led to the eventual recovery of the vessel from the reef.
The House resolution says, “Without a doubt Lt. Kevin Patrick Whalen has the best interests of the territory at heart and continues to protect and provide for our coastal needs.
“His exceptional services are deeply appreciated by the people of American Samoa and he’s commended for his many accomplishments.”
