ASG officials held another meeting with FEMA Region 9 officials in Oakland, California this week to try and work out a way forward for the new Fono building.

Public Works Director Faleosina Voigt, and the two Fono counsels, Director of the Legislative Reference Bureau Nathaniel Savali and Senate Counsel Mitzie Taase attended the meeting.

The construction of the new Fono building has been suspended for more than two months because according to FEMA, the foundation does not meet local and federal regulations for construction in a flood zone area.

In October a delegation led by Lt Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga also discussed the Fono building with Region 9 Administrator Robert Fenton.

A report on those discussions said that FEMA is willing to work with ASG to see how the project can move forward.

FEMA has warned that if the regulations are not followed, American Samoa can lose funding for future disasters as well as Capital Improvement Program (CIP) money.

The delegation had sought the assistance of the Department of Interior but was told that ASG would have to deal with FEMA directly on this issue.
