The annual Samoa National Week of Prayer and Fasting started January 1st with the official launch at a special service attended by government and business leaders and led by the National Council of Churches.
This year marks the 28th year since it was initiated by the government and NCC, following a spate of natural disasters including the devastating cyclones Ofa and Val in 1990 and 1991 respectively.
The practice is carried out at every church in every village so villagers can attend to offer prayers of thanksgiving and seek God’s divine guidance for the country and its leaders.
Prayers are also offered for protection from natural disasters.
The Samoa Government, in recent years, has also moved to enshrine in its Constitution that Samoa is a Christian country.
