The MV Manuatele’s first international voyage arrived safely at Matautu wharf in Apia, Samoa  yesterday afternoon.

Sea conditions were far from ideal and it was a rough ride for members of  the sailing team and a few rugby players for the Pacific Games, many of whom had never sailed on a  boat before.

Director of Port Administration Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele said there were 21 passengers, from the American Samoa sailing team and the rugby team.  Among the travelers was a para sailor Alofa Faualo.

Captains Loleni Faiai and Pua Ah Mai, with Harbor Master Silila Patane and the Manu’atele crew, made sure the experience was comfortable and safe for the athletes and officials which included two directors, Evelyn Satele Lilio, Director of the Territorial Administration on Aging Office and Sandra King Young, Medicaid Director who are both officials of the American Samoa Sailing Association.

Dr Naseri Aitaoto one of the team doctors was also part of the traveling group on the Manu’atele.

The passengers were given a safety briefing  as the vessel set sail yesterday morning.

The Manuatele is set to return from Apia, Sunday and will be going to Samoa again on July 19 after the Games are completed to bring back the team.
