Samoa Prime Minister Tuilapea Sailele Malielegaoi, has warned people seeking employment with two iconic American companies to be cautious.

According to Talamua Online, Tuilaepa was reacting to news that the Hilton Hotel Chain and Coca Cola are in the process of recruiting 950 workers from Samoa.

The companies have apparently been negotiating through a local agent – Beneficial Future for Samoa (BFS) since July 2019.

BFS spokesperson Enoka Sio said two other international companies have shown interest in recruiting Samoans workers.

These companies have been identified as a longline fishing company in American Samoa and the Royal Princess Cruises Company in Canada.

BFS said the American companies job offers are for nine months while the American Samoa fishing company is contracting workers for 6 months.

No eligibility criteria are given and Sio said acceptance is based on the curriculum vitae provided.

“Ten have already left for American Samoa and negotiations are continuing between the local agent and the Canadian Royal Princess company,” Sio said.

All expenses including visas are paid for by the companies recruiting the workers and the salary offer sits at $2000 a fortnight said Sio.

Tuilaepa said on his weekly online program with Talamua Online that private companies can recruit workers from Samoa without Government affiliation.

While he welcomes such employment opportunities, he also cautioned them to be careful and take time to scrutinize and analyze such offers before making any commitment.
