A former professor who taught for 22 years at the University of Auckland, New Zealandhas been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of the National University of Samoa.
The appointment of Professor Aiono Dr. Alec Ekerom as the new Vice Chancellor was confirmed by Minister of Education Loau Keneti Sio this afternoon.
The Samoa Observer quotes the Education Minister saying the appointment of Prof. Aiono comes at a crucial time with students preparing for final examinations.
“I believe the new Vice Chancellor has a broad scope of experience both in business and medical field, knowledge and high qualifications that will be essential to the university and its development,” said the Minister.
A graduate of St. Josephe’s College Lotopa, Aiono received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Papua New Guinanbefore pursuing his M.B.A. degree from the University of Keele in the United Kingdom.
He is also the Chief Editor of two Pacific Health journals – Pacific Journal of Reproductive Health (founder) and the Pacific Health Dialog.
Aiono also has a private health clinic and a hotel in Samoa.
