An active monsoon trough lingering near the Samoan islands is whipping up gusty winds and rainfall we’re experiencing.
The trough will maintain damaging and gusty northwest winds with potential for flash flooding, according to the latest bulletin issued by the National Weather Service at 11 am.
As for Tropical Storm Sarai, it has slightly weakened. and was located 600 miles southwest of Tutuila.
Meteorologist in Charge, Elinor Lutu McMoore says Sarai will continuie to weaken as it passes south of the Samoan islands.
A high wind warning is in effect. There were power outages due to the winds this morning. Also expect downed tree branches and whole trees.
A gale warning is also in place for surrounding waters. Mariners are encouraged to alter plans to avoid areas with gale force winds.
The territory is also under a flash flood watch with landslides a possibility as grounds are already saturated.
There’s also a high surf advisory in place with increasing threat of coastal flooding and beach erosion, rough seas and dangerous rip currents.
The greatest risk to the coastal areas starts tonight.
These weather conditions are likely to continue up to Wednesday, New Year’s Day.
