The Homeless Shelter of the Department of Human and Social Services is the recipient of 16 baskets of canned food and hygiene products which were collected in a drive by Leone High School .

The drive was organized as part of the Alofa Foai Fua charity event however because schools were closed early due to the measles outbreak the activity was pushed back to allow time for students and teachers to collect donations.

The Leone High School groups who took part were the Leone High School Student Council, Close Up Club, Junior Statesmen of America and Health Occupational Student Association (HOSA).

Yesterday the students and their advisors, Mikaela Saelua and Neesha Masoli, presented their donations to the Homeless Shelter.

On behalf of Pa’ulia Pelenato, Acting Assistant Director for DHSS’ Children and Family Services Division that manages the Homeless Shelter and the management team and staff of DHSS, “I extend our sincerest appreciation and fa’afetai tele to the students of Leone High School, particularly the members of the Student Council and the Close Up, JSA and HOSA Clubs for this generous donation.”

He said, “We are very impressed with their level of commitment to charitable activities and their sense of citizenship and we hope that this is a major mood-booster for the students as giving and helping others is hugely empowering and fulfilling.

“We are also grateful to the Principal and faculty of Leone High School for their support of student engagement and for promoting social responsibility through giving and volunteerism among the student body.”
