Airport Apron Rehabilitation completed next year

The Apron Rehabilitation Project at Pago Pago International Airport, the largest airport project currently underway for the airport, is targeted to be completed in mid 2021.

While previous airport runway reconstruction jobs have been awarded in a single contract this proect has been split into three phases. The Governor’s State of the Territory Comprehensive Report says this was to allow the airport to remain in operation during the construction.

McConnell Dowell is building phase 1, and Paramount Builders have phase 2, while the remaining phase 3 has yet to be awarded even though bids were opened a while back.

KHJ News understands McConnell Dowell was the lowest bidder however Port Admonistration has decided to rebid this phase.

Other Upgrade Work at Tafuna:

The Airfield Lights Upgrade Project saw the upgrading of all airport lights and cablinig on the airfield to LED fixtures. This will ensure the airport lighting system is of the highest standard guaranteeing safe aircraft operations.

Last year 3000 feet of asphalt was laid for runway 5/23 the primary runway at Pago Pago International Airport. Sections of the runway at the touch down zone that were in very poor condition were paved,

In the terminal building the arrival area has been extended and spruced up and a new modern luggage carousel, of the standard found at US airports has been installed, along with air conditioning and a more welcoming ambience.

‘The extension and repairs were done by Paramount Builders.

Also expected to be completed soon is rebuilding of the airport hanger which was damaged by Cyclone Gita. The project was awarded to H&H Construction and is expected to be completed in March.
