Both the House and Senate have approved a House Concurrent Resolution paying tribute to the late HC Pulefaasisina Palauni Mariota Tuiasosopo.
The resolution highlights Pulefa’asisina’s outstanding service to the government and people of American Samoa which began in 1962 when he served as an assistant to Governor Rex Lee.
He served as an assistant to nine governors, seven appointed and two locally elected.
Among his many achievements, he established the choir of the American Samoa Arts Council and under his leadership the choir traveled extensively representing American Samoa in numerous Pacific Arts Festivals, Hawaii festivities and events on the US West Coast.
It was under his chairmanship of the Arts Council that the territory began the annual Flag Day day and Christmas Performing Arts Programs.
Pulefa’asisina was a cultural advisor under Governor Uifaatali Peter Coleman and he continued in that role under Governor Aifili Paulo Lutali.
It was during Lutali’s administration that he was selected as Secretary General of the South Pacific Commission.
He was instrumental in establishing the Samoan and Pacific Studies Progam at the American Samoa Community College.
He was a leader in his Congregational Church of Jesus in Fagatogo.
Pulefa’asisina was also a senator for Alataua District.
The resolution said his “passing marks the end of almost 50 years of service to American Samoa and the people of the Pacific. He will be missed and it is prudent for the American Samoa Legislature, government and people to pay tribute and celebrate his life.”
Pulefa’asisina‘s funeral services are being held today and tomorrow.
His first sevice is at the Fagatogo CCJS church at 1:30 this afternoon and his final service will be at 9 tomorrow morning.
