Bags of sugar from India recalled in Samoa

The Samoa Ministry of Health has recalled bags of sugar imported from India which had been found to be unfit for human consumption.

The notice was issued by Director General of Health, Leausa Dr Take Naseri earlier this week following public concerns about cleanliness and safety of the product on social media.

A businessman in Savaii posted on FaceBook that when he opened a few bags of sugar, there was dirt inside. He said he bought the sugar from Frankie’s Store.

“Pursuant to the Food Act 2015, the Ministry of Health hereby recalls all bags of sugar with the following information are not to be sold to the public,” the statement reads.

The recalled sacks of sugar come from India, weighing 50kgs were imported in March 2020 to Samoa by the Ascent Group of India, the manufacturer been identified as Vitthalrao Shinde SSK Ltd.

“The public is hereby advised that the recalled food product is not fit for human consumption,” the statement reads.
