The government of the Peoples Republic of China is currently conducting several financial feasibility studies into development projects the Samoa government has asked them to finance.
According to the Samoa Observer newspaper, a spokesperson at the Chinese Embassy in Apia confirmed the request had been made for help with the Asau port and wharf.
Zhang Muyue said the feasibility study started in 2019 but COVID-19 has delayed some of the work and decision making on logistical plans.
Financial Secretary Leasiosiofa’asisina Oscar Malielegaoi told the newspaper the two Asau projects were included in the recent Cabinet Development Committee visit to various projects on the big island.
‘’If we do secure funding to again refurbish those two assets that will transform the economy on that side of Savai’i,’’ he said.
Other major projects the government looked at in Savaii included the Gataivai Water Supply System and some tourism related projects like the resumption of inter-island flights with the national carrier Samoa Airways.
Meanwhile major projects aimed at improving travel conditions are also underway under PRC financial assistance.
“The Government has approved the construction works for the Vaiaata road with the funding of SAT $12.2 million,” said Galumalemana Taatialeoitiiti Schwalger, CEO of the Land Transport Authority.
She explained the road which runs inland, on Savaii island will ease restrictions on the coastal roads, especially when flooding occurs during the wet season.
The contracts for the road construction have been awarded to Apia Lua Construction, Sakalafai Contractors and Ah Liki Construction.
