The Fiji Red Cross Society has acknowledged receipt of a donation of $59,980.47 Fijian dollars from the Fijian Association Pago Pago and the people of American Samoa.

The Fiji Red Cross Society Director General, Ms. Ilisapeci Rokotunidau thanked the Fijian Association, Pago Pago and the people of American Samoa for their tremendous support in the humanitarian efforts to address the needs of communities affected by Tropical Cyclones Yasa and Ana in Vanua Levu.

The local Fijian community held a relief drive in January and collected money, clothing, food supplies, and other necessities for cyclone victims.

The Fiji Red Cross president said the needs on the ground is massive and this assistance will greatly alleviate some difficulties people are still facing.

“Response has been very challenging due to the different needs of a large number of people who are also spread over a large geographical area and the funds received will allow us to provide the much needed items to identified communities and individuals so that we can continue to reach affected peoples and families in the hardest hit areas” said Rokotunidau.

The funds will also assist the Red Cross Society to set up water tanks so that women and girls, children and those living with a disability can have easy access to water in their homes.
