The first of eight flights approved by the Samoa Cabinet to take 529 sailors to work overseas is leaving tomorrow with 63 bound for work on merchant ships plying the Mediterranean Ocean.

Speaking on TV3 Samoa caretaker Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said government is able to provide young sailors jobs through it’s Marine Training School at Mulinu’u which is part of the Nationbal University of Samoa.

“This is another worthwhile project funded by our friends in China and is helping provide jobs for our people,” he said.

He said the next flight on July 6 will take 83 sailors and 100 will leave on July 27th.

One flight will leave August 10 taking 72 sailors with one flight each on September, October, November and December taking the last 148 sailors.

All Samoan sailors have jobs negotiated by Samoa Shipping Services, an arm of the Samoan government set up to monitor their training and job placements.
