The Maintenance and Operations Division of Public Works is trying to stabilize several sections of the highway on the east end of Tutuila which are on the verge of collapsing because of wave action.
Supervisor Ite Matagia said they are doing a quick fix but these are not permanent construction work. “Sea walls are needed to protect the highway,” he said.
The temporary fix is to haul boulders to fill in beneath the road to try and slow down the erosion.
Some parts of the east side highway where the erosion is very bad are reduced to one lane as the seaside lane is almost wiped out by the waves.
At present the M & O crews are working at Laulii, Alao, Fagaitua and Aua.
