A well known figure in the law enforcement community spanning more than five decades. Tuala Michael Sala, passed away yesterday in Portland, Oregon.
Tuala was a former Director of Homeland Security, former Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety, founded the South Pacific Island Criminal Intelligence Network (SPICIN), was a former President of the Lions Club of Pago Pago, and held numerous other titles.
After his retirement from government service he ran the famous $2 Beach in Avaio.
His daughter, Jennifer Jones, posted on his FaceBook page yesterday, “This morning my daddy drew his last breath and ended his earthly journey. He was a formidable leader, a lover of travel, and a passionate Samoan. He made friends wherever he went and was always up for a bbq or party. He was larger than life. He was a legend. His passing has left a void that can never be filled.”
Mike had traveled to the mainland a few years ago for medical reasons and to be close to his children, but kept in touch with events on island, particularly government and politics.
His personality was contagious and as his daughter attested made friends whenever he went.
As news of his death circulated, friends, colleagues and relatives shared their memories of “Uncle Mike.”
Professionals in their 30s and 40s told stories of how Mike groomed them in their careers or helped them in some way.
His friends and fellow Lions recall a man who was generous with his time and resources, the ultimate host.
