Efforts are underway to mobilize assistance for Tonga after a devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami a week ago.
Last Friday the Governor’s Chief of Staff Tuimavave Tauapa’i Laupola met with several cabinet leaders to discuss plans to provide humanitarian support to the Kingdom.
A press release from the Governor’s Office said activities and events that will allow the general public to donate will be finalized in a meeting early in the new week.
The tentative kickoff date for this initiative is Wednesday, January 26th.
Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga has sent a message of condolences to King Tupou VI expressing sympathy for the loss of lives, destruction of homes and infrastructure and “the excruciating pain that ensues.”
