Samoa has extended its current Level 3 nationwide lockdown for another 72 hours to end Thursday 27 January after 5 frontline staff tested positive for coronavirus.
Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa announced this evening that the decision was made by Cabinet earlier today after being informed that five frontline workers have tested positive while they were caring for the 15 positive cases off the Brisbane, Australia flight last week.
Fiame said some services will be opened temporarily and some restrictions have been eased and will see shops, gas stations, cash power outlets, banks, money transfer services and chemists open temporarily tomorrow, Tuesday, January 25 from 8am until 2 in the afternoon.
The same opening hours will apply on Thursday January 27.
“There has been no evidence of any community transmission so far,” assured the PM.
She cautioned that if it appears that there is a community transmission, then Cabinet will go back to a full level 3.
The public is required to show their vaccination cards, wear masks and practice social distancing. Children under 12 are prohibited in public places.
Police will continue to enforce the lockdown restrictions.
