Manumalo Academy ‘s Katherine Kim wasn’t present to receive her valedictorian honors and awards last week. She was already in Annapolis to begin a challenging six weeks of Plebe Summer.
The purpose of Plebe Summer is to lay the foundation of the Naval Academy’s four-year professional development curriculum.
Kim, the daughter of Mrs. Park, Math teacher at Manumalo, and a well known private tutor, has been accepted for the 2022 freshman class at the Naval Academy.
She is among 1,200 students selected from across the nation and territories.
Last year, the academy received over 1,600 applications.
During the six weeks of class, the candidates have no access to television, movies, the internet
and music. They also have restricted access to cell phones. They are only permitted to make there
calls during the six weeks.
The pressure and rigors of Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help cadets prepare for their
first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenges that awaits them.
US News and World Report has recognized the naval academy as a top five undergraduate
engineering school and a top 20 liberals arts college.
Kim was also accepted at John Hopkins University but opted to go to the US Naval Academy instead. Congratulations Kim!
