Last Saturday, the Rex Lee Auditorium was transformed into what invited guests described as a “world class” gallery of art for the Moso’oi Gala.
This is one of the events in the Moso’oi Festival of Arts, organized by ABLE or Agency for Better Living Endeavors. It was a “classy, cultural and contemporary” scene.
More than 200 art enthusiasts, collectors, government officials and members of the business community awed at the breathtaking display of art and talent that evening.
In addition to the myriad of paintings, photos and art pieces, the music lineup was top tier, with both veteran and undiscovered talent. Ulale Ulale, Henry Mika, Jarom Fuimaono, Henry Collins, Vaea Aetonu of the popular band Faiva, Afasene Tuimavave, flutist Tasiaeafe Hiner and a special contemporary performance by Eterei Maiava.
Spectators also enjoyed food art by Chef Devynne Fuga, who cooked up a fusion of food all with locally sourced ingredients. They also heard an oral presentation by Tooa Matautia.
Models showcased traditional wear, there was a weaving demonstration and a spectacular fashion show by Le Lagaali Couture by Isabella Ah-mu Mageo. Isabella showcased her ‘Telesa” Collection inspired by Taboo stories of the teine sa. Local artists included high school students, photographers, painters, carvers, weavers, and the like.
The evening included a silent auction of the artwork being featured and artists exhibiting their work for the first time were astonished that guests wanted to buy their art work.
The auction raised more than $15,000 and 100% of the proceeds went directly to the artists.
The guests were very impressed. Chande Lutu-Drabble stated, “It was the best formal event that I ever been to in American Samoa. It was an affair to remember.”
Leone High School teacher, Tony Esau expressed his appreciation for inviting his students to showcase their work at the Gala and that he hopes their experience was insightful.
