With LBJ Hospital hiring nurses from Fiji and the Philippines, some members of the public have asked why the hospital isn’t hiring from Samoa which is closer and nurses from there speak the language and understand the Samoan culture.
When KHJ News put the question to LBJ Hospital CEO, Moefaauo Bill Emmsley, he said there was a review of the curriculum of Samoa’s nursing program and he was advised that it was not at a level comparable to the US licensing standard. The CEO said this would present a challenge in acquiring US certification for nurses from Samoa.
But Moefaauo isn’t ruling out the possibility of hiring nurses from across the water in the future.
