Carmel Sepuloni makes history as New Zealand’s first Pasifika deputy prime minister, to the delight of other Pacific members of Parliament.
Speaking after the announcement yesterday afternoon, Sepuloni says that it’s a huge honor and privilege.
“I acknowledge the significance of this for our Pacific community. I am proudly Samoan, Tongan and New Zealand European, and represent generations of New Zealanders with mixed heritage.”
Sepuloni will be formally sworn in to the role along with Hipkins on Wednesday.
“It is very hard to fathom that a working class girl from Waitara—who turned Westie—that that person can become the deputy prime minister of New Zealand.
“I will be there backing Chris up every step of the way and doing whatever he needs me to do.”
Incoming Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says, Sepuloni is the logical choice to be his second in command.
“I asked Carmel to be my deputy prime minister because I believe that she’s the best person to do the job.”
Minister for Pacific Peoples Aupito William Sio says, it’s a real milestone.
“Congratulations Carmel Sepuloni. O ou mama na. You have our love, support and best wishes. Your unanimous appointment opens up the door to inspiring all Generation Six Bs to every possibility that they dream of.”
Speaking to TVNZ, Aupito says that Sepuloni’s appointment is a dream come true for those who came here for a better life.
“It’s historic. Dreams and aspirations of many of our parents and grandparents would validate the fact that their dreams of coming here to this nation and making it their home is a beautiful thing.”
