Transition of leadership in local Catholic Diocese

bishop-changeover

Bishop Emeritus Peter Hugh Brown, whose retirement as Bishop of the local Catholic Diocese was effective on Saturday, was presented a Fono Concurrent Resolution, honoring him.

This took place at the mass of installation in which Bishop Brown officially handed the symbols of leadership to his successor, Bishop Kolio Etuale Tumanuvao.

Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean gave Tuala-uta Representative Larry Sanitoa the honor of presenting the resolution to Bishop Brown.

The retiring bishop brought laughter when he said most of the Fono resolutions he’s read or are presented in the Cathedral are for those who have passed away. He felt special that the Fono has seen it fit to honor him with a resolution while he’s alive.

Bishop Peter Brown said, while he is sad to be leaving, he is happy that he leaves the Diocese to a son of American Samoa.

In his thank you message at the end of the Mass, he gave special mention of the late Archbishop Alapati Mataeliga.

Bishop Brown also thanked Acting Governor Talauega Eleasalo Ale, who was present with his wife Marian and the leaders of the American Samoa Government, as well as all the various offices and committees of the Diocese for their support and love.

After the handover of the staff and whisk, the Bishop Kolio reflected on his motto, “Love is Sacrifice.”
