Fofo Representative Fiu Johnny Saelua has requested a report from the Department of Education on schools that are facing a shortage of teachers.
He told the House, yesterday, that school principals have reported they don’t have enough teachers in, both, elementary and high schools.
When he inquired with DOE, he was told that the Department of Human Resources is delaying the processing of teacher hires.
He said the school year is progressing fast, and DOE should step up to fill the teacher vacancies. Fiu, the Chairman of the House Education Committee, is requesting a report from DOE showing the number of teachers that are needed in the schools. He urged that this be treated as a mater of priority.
Representative Lua’itaua Gene Pan described the deplorable conditions of the roads, especially on the eastern side of the island; and called for a hearing with the Department of Public Works to explain what is being planned to fix the roads. The Public Works Committee, which is now chaired by Rep. Ape Mike Asifoa, has set a hearing for Thursday morning with officials of Public Works.
