Two federal employees were terminated from their positions in American Samoa on February 13, 2025. They were notified via email and the termination was effective immediately.

These 2 employees worked for United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). This federal agency offers financial assistance to farmers and landowners around the country to help them with their farming operations and to implement conservation on their land. NRCS in American Samoa delivered over $800K divided to roughly 150 clients in 2024, all of whom are residents of American Samoa.

The two employees whose services were terminated were part of the nation wide firings of federal employees still within their probationary period. Both NRCS employees are local residents who started with the agency within the last 12 months.

One of them who did not wish to be named said, “It is rare these positions are filled with locals and is a real loss for local representation in federal positions. The office was already understaffed and now is left with critical positions vacant, severely compromising the offices ability to meet their mission and serve the people of American Samoa.”
