The American Samoa Department of Health’s Leo o Aiga and Maternal and Child Health Programs hosted a heartwarming Outdoor Movie Night  last night at the Football Federation of American Samoa soccer stadium in Pago Pago. In celebration of Disabilities Awareness Month, the event brought together around 150 attendees, mostly families with children with disabilities, for an evening of fun, connection, and community.

Families spread out across benches, blankets, and chairs, creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere where children could safely wander and play. The main attraction of the evening was the 93KHJ mobile video van, which dazzled the audience with a short light and sound show before screening a full-length movie. Classic movie-night snacks, including popcorn, hotdogs, shave ice, and cotton candy, were generously provided by 93KHJ and X-Treme Bounce, adding to the festive spirit.

Ipu Eliapo-Unutoa from the Department of Health highlighted the broader purpose of the event.  She said, “This was about finding community.” Leo o Aiga is a community of families who share experiences and support, identifying with one another because of their children with special healthcare needs. We met many new families last night, the children had a blast because they weren’t in a restricted place, they could be themselves, the parents seemed so relaxed and enjoying themselves. It was such a success.”

She added, “We couldn’t have done it without our partners—KHJ and Uncle Joey, Extreme Bounce, Faiivae Godinet and FIFA, our families and friends who helped in every way possible. We are building our community to embrace our loved ones with special needs. We are so grateful for our community.

Looking ahead, the Department of Health is gearing up for Autism Awareness Month in April, with plans already underway for another Outdoor Movie Night on the west side of Tutuila.
