Representative Malaeoletalu Melesio Gurr is concerned that two elementary schools in his constituency, Uifaatali Peter Coleman Elementary and Matafao Elementary are not adequately prepared for an accreditation review in three weeks.

He found, during a recent visit to both schools, some concerning conditions which may lead to an unfavorable accreditation review if not fixed.

He listed them in a letter to the Director of Education Maefau Dr. Mary Taufetee and urged prompt action by DOE to address them.

Malaeoletalu said the main entrance to Coleman Elementary needs to be paved. “The uneven dirt road collects water, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” he informed the DOE Director. “This is not only an eyesore but also an unsafe and unwelcoming environment for anyone entering the campus, especially the students.” In addition, several classrooms require new tiles, but the school administration has not received a timeline on when the repairs will be carried out.

The faipule has been told that the School PTA would be holding a po siva to raise funds for new tiles and other repairs before the accreditation review. He said, while he appreciates the PTA’s willingness to step in, “it is unfair that they should bear the cost of such essential improvements.”

He pointed out that the PTA is also providing 5-gallon water bottles and dispensers because the school’s water fountains have been deemed unsafe for drinking.

While Malaeoletalu’s letter focused on Coleman Elementary, he said Matafao Elementary also needs attention. Both schools experience flooding in many classrooms when it rains.

“I understand that many of these challenges have been inherited, but I am confident that your team will be able to find solutions, especially while ARPA funds are still available,” said Malaeoletalu. “The readiness of our schools is crucial to ensuring a successful accreditation process and most importantly providing a safe and conducive learning environment for our students.”
