A groundbreaking ceremony Friday morning signaled the start of what’s been touted as the biggest project undertaken at the LBJ Tropical Medical Center since it was opened in 1978.
That is the construction of a new Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Room, MRI and IT Division.
Speaking at the groundbreaking this morning, Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga commended the board and management of the LBJ Hospital for undertaking this monumental project. He said no other institution is more important than the hospital and the new facility is one that will elevate the health care of the public.
He gave these remarks.

From previous stories, the new two story building to be constructed will house the Emergency Room, ICU, MRI and IT Division.
The design work was done by GLHM of Phoenix, Arizona and the contractor is Willis Construction. Pioa Consulting & Engineering will provide construction management for the project.
The ground floor of the new building will house the ER, which will have 26 beds and the ICU will occupy the top floor. It will have 16 beds.
The targeted completion date for the project is October 2026.
