Relatives of one of the greatest divers in Olympic history, Greg Louganis, say they are grateful to meet up with him and his brother Malcolm Lutu, during their brief visit.

A cousin of Louganis, Dr. Ruth Matagi-Tofiga, a former Director of Education said Greg’s biological father Fouvale Lutu is her late mother, Sipili Lutu Matagi’s, brother.

Greg was put up for adoption when he was 9-months-old.

Fouvale Lutu, now 84-years-old, resides in Hawaii. He and a 94-year-old sister are the last surviving siblings out of 11 children of the late high Chief Lutu Faasuka of Fagatogo.

Dr. Matagi-Tofiga said yesterday was an emotional time “for most our family to finally meet up with Greg.”

He and Malcolm attended the Sunday service at the CCCAS Church in Fagatogo, with Rev. Iasepi Ulu, presiding.

A family to’ana’i at Maugaoali’i was also held, after which Greg visited family graves at Maugaoalii, Fagatogo and Nuuuli.

“It was a Sunday afternoon of family history and genealogy,” said Dr. Matagi-Tofiga.

She said Hymn 353 LMS, Lota Nuu Moni Ta te Fiafia Ai, sums up their reunion. “Land of our Fathers, oh land of my birth where my family and friends reside, Samoa give thanks because our land has been blessed and fruitful.”

Greg Louganis, and the production team for the PBS Show “Family Ingredients,” depart the territory tonight.
