On October 13, 2024, the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC), Camp Pendleton celebrated the US Navy’s 249th birthday and held a cake-cutting ceremony.

As is tradition in the Navy, the oldest active-duty and the youngest active-duty sailor are invited to cut the cake with a sword, symbolizing that sailors are warriors. The passing of the cake from the oldest sailor to the youngest sailor represents the passing of tradition and experience, nurturing and leading young sailors to renew the US Navy.

The oldest active-duty sailor present at the ceremony was CDR John Rudd, the command chaplain and the youngest was HA Baelin King, from the 31 Area Health Clinic.

Baelin King is the son of the late Christopher John King and Danielle Clemens King of Tafuna.
