New Book on Siapo Art Set for 2025 Release

Pago Pago, American Samoa – The art of siapo, Samoa’s traditional barkcloth, is receiving a renewed spotlight with the upcoming release of the book Siapo: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. Co-published by Fa'asamoa Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving Samoan art and culture, the book is authored by Mary Anne Peck with contributions from Reggie Meredith and a team of artists and cultural experts. Pre-orders for the book are now open at faasamoaarts.com, with a scheduled release in April 2025.

The book explores the rich history, cultural significance, and modern revival of siapo, drawing on in-depth research and experiences shared by Peck and Meredith during their visits to major institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Field Museum in Chicago. Siapo, known internationally as "barkcloth," is a symbol of Samoan heritage and craftsmanship, celebrated for its intricate designs and cultural depth.

“This project has been a labor of love,” said Peck. “Our goal is to bridge the past, present, and future of siapo, not only to honor the legacy of trailblazers like Aunty Mary Pritchard but to inspire future generations to engage with this beautiful art form.”

Siapo: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow combines striking visuals and comprehensive storytelling, featuring historical artifacts, insights from museum professionals, and interviews with siapo artists. Chapters are designed to serve as an educational resource, complete with key terms and discussion questions for students and educators.

The book also celebrates the support of the American Samoa Humanities Council, which funded the team’s journey across the United States to study siapo collections and collaborate with museum conservators.

“This book isn’t just a tribute to our heritage; it’s a call to action for our youth and community to embrace and perpetuate siapo,” added Meredith, Emeritus Professor at the American Samoa Community College.

Pre-orders include signed copies by the author and contributing artists, making this release a meaningful keepsake for readers. Fa'asamoa Arts is also engaging the community through workshops and events at their gallery in Leone, aimed at sparking interest in siapo-making among young learners.
