Innovative Fishing Program Launching in American Samoa – Applications Now Open
Pago Pago, American Samoa – The Department of Commerce is excited to announce the launch of its innovative fishing education and business incubation program, set to begin on January 28, 2025. This groundbreaking initiative, funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), aims to revolutionize commercial fishing in American Samoa by introducing advanced techniques and state-of-the-art vessels designed to enhance safety, sustainability, and profitability for local fishermen.
The program features the Super Alia, a high-tech fishing vessel capable of extended trips and equipped with cutting-edge technology to meet modern fishing demands. The program includes both classroom instruction and hands-on training on the water, led by experienced fishermen, including Captain Joe and master fisherman William Chute from Fiji, both bringing decades of expertise in tuna longlining and deep-sea bottom fishing.
“This program is a game-changer for American Samoa’s fishing industry,” said Tony Langkilde of the Department of Commerce. “With new tools, training, and education, we’re not only improving the way we fish but also creating sustainable opportunities for our people across Tutuila, Manu’a, Aunu’u, and Swains Island.”
The program is open to individuals 18 years and older who are interested in pursuing a career in commercial fishing. Applications are free of charge and can be picked up at the Department of Commerce office located at the Fagatogo Marketplace. Staff will be available to assist with the application process.
