The 2017 Flag Day Committee has reversed an earlier decision to change the placings for the championship race held earlier today which saw second placed Iseula relegated to last place after it was decided they had not complied with race rules at the start.

Fagatogo’s Iseula had come in second place but complaints had been lodged against Iseula citing a failure to adhere to committee rules pertaining to the using of color coded flags before the start.

A decision was then made to relegate Iseula.

However after a lengthy discussion between Captains and the Flag Day Committee, it was decided to uphold the race placings and reinstated Iseula to second placing afterall.

Fuao captain, Senate President Gaoteote Palaie had criticized the committee for not sticking to pre race plans for steps to take if the weather caused any changes.

According to Gaoteote the original plan was to run the race from near the airport but if bad weather caused changes to the race course, then it would be run in the harbor.

Instead the committee decided to shorten the course to about three miles.
Other captains agreed with Gaoteote, but in the end the Samoan tradition of ‘ava fatafata’or  mutual respect prevailed with the official results remaining as follows:
1st Manulele Tausala
2nd Iseula
3rd Fuao
4th Paepaeulupo’o
5th Matasaua
6th Taema
7th Feluoleafiafi.
