Sixty-four years since opening as Samoa’s top educational institution, Samoa College in the village of Vaiase, has taken a historical new direction and is being run by a private organization.
The college in now a charter school.
Principal, Reupena Rimoni, says this means the school is now run and operated as a partnership between the government and the Samoa College Old Pupils Association (SCOPA).
“This means government still funds the college but it is now managed by SCOPA under a charter agreement,” said the Principal.
SCOPA will handle all decision making regarding the college including maintenance of grounds and buildings.

The principal also said in a televised interview that all teachers will be paid directly by government.
The move is to ensure the streamlining of education policies that the government has been systematically implementing in the past few years.
The model has been used successfully in other countries around the world including New Zealand.
