Director of Education Dr. Ruth Matagi Tofiga had stated during budget hearings that the start of the new school year should be smooth with teachers, school furniture, school buses and other services in place.
But today Tuala-uta Representative Vui Florence Saulo reported that Tafuna High School doesn’t have enough chairs and desks and urged that the Education Committee look into the situation and try and get help as soon as possible,.
Vui said that students from the Pavaiai and Faleniu area who had attended Leone High School are now being directed to Tafuna High School because that is the school in their district.
She said this has resulted in a big jump in enrollement and the school did not have enough chairs and desks to accomdoate all the students.
House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale suggested that the committee conduct an inspection of all schools to see for themselves the conditions of the classrooms while the new school year is just beginning.
Vui is hopeful that the government can come up with a quick solution because she said, “you can’t have kids sitting on the floor or standing during class.”
