Vaitinasa Dr. Salu Hunkin Finau today made it official. Her name will be on the ballot for the 2016 congressional race.

The veteran educator made her announcement at a gathering at Lucky 7 restaurant in Nu’uuli attended by chiefs of her village Vailoa and mostly teachers and administrators of the Department of Education.
Some DOE retirees were also present along with two Deputy Directors of DOE, Faauifono Vaitautolu and Philo Jennings.
Faiivae Alex Godinet who was Chief of Staff and Campaign Manager for former Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, brother of candidate Vaitinasa was also present.
Campaign Manager for the Committee to Elect Vaitinasa, Tofa Faauaa Kataferu, welcomed the attendees before Rtd. Rev. Elder Faletoi Uso gave a spiritual message which encouraged conviction, fortitude and not giving up during Vaitinasas’s political quest.
He said there’ll be storms and rough spots ahead but with their faith in God and confidence in the candidate they can successfully reach their destination or goal.
Addressing the gathering, Vaitinasa referred to her 40 years of service in government, of which the pinnacles are her tenure as President of the American Samoa Community College and Director of Education.
She said her comments should not be interpreted as criticism of government and community but were observations from her personal and professional experience as a government employees, a mother and wife and a concerned citizens wanting to make a difference.
She says much needs to be changed.

Vaitinasa was a governor candidate in the 2012 general elections and is running for the congressional seat for the first time.
Her brother Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin held the seat for more than ten terms.
