Guests at the grand opening of Le Faleo’o Cultural Center at Mapusaga-fou were welcomed with an ava ceremony, a feast and entertainment.
They also saw craftsmen and women demonstrate fine mat weaving, siapo making, the ava ceremony, making of the umu and even coconut climbing.
More than half a dozen faleo’o or huts have been erected on the estate of the late Mark and Diana Tuinei and in each, an artist explains their craft in Samoan while a translator provides English commentary.
Guests are told of the significance of and the uses of what the artists are making in the culture and legends associated with them.
One of the founders, David Tuinei, explained the significance of the faleo’o.
