What was intended as an intervention for remedial students at Kanana Fou Elementary gave some the impression that the school was back in session.
Principal Liza Sauni even got a call from the Office of the Commissioner of Public Safety’s Office about it.
Ms. Sauni said after seeing the school work turned in by students, she came up with the idea of offering tutoring for students who were struggling.
There was no announcement but parents of the students were contacted and the school worked out a schedule that would be in compliance with the COVID-19 rules. And the tutoring was for one week only, with two grades in session per day.
The classes started on Monday and according to the principal they had 4 or 5 students for each of the two grades.
She said there was mixed reaction from parents. Some were dead against the idea, others welcomed the help for their children and some parents couldn’t wait to send their kids back to school.
She said the tutoring was supposed to be just for the students needing extra help . But some parents thought their school was back in session and just dropped their kids off at campus.
“We had to call the parents of those children to please pick them up.”
Principal Sauni said while their tutoring classes were scheduled for Monday to Friday this week she’s decided to end them today.
