Gwen Tauiliili Langkilde is 2nd female judge

Gwen Tauiliili Langkilde becomes the second woman to be appointed a permanent judge of the American Samoa Judiciary.

She was confirmed by the Senate by unanimous vote this morning.

During her 15-minute confirmation hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee chaired by Senator Tuiagamoa Tavai, senators heaped accolades on the judge nominee and thanked Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and Chief Justice Michael Kruse for appointment.

Senate President Tuaolo Fruean said when he was serving on Appellate Court sessions visiting judges were very impressed when Tauiliili Langkilde presented cases before them.

He added that when he was Election Commissioner Gwen was legal counsel at the Election Office and he can vouch for her honesty, professionalism and dedication to her work.

Tuaolo said if there was any negative thing about her appointment it was her youth, as those appointed to the bench are usually ready for retirement.

Senators Malaepule Lua Moliga, Magalei Logovii, Faiivae Alex Godinet and Soliai Tuipine also spoke highly of the nominee.

Malaepule said she was the second woman to be appointed to the bench, Mrs Mere bethan being the first. He said Tauiliili Langkilde’s appointment would serve as an inspiration for young woman of the territory.

Magalei and Faiivae who were members of the ASTCA Board when the nominee was legal counsel said she has made tremendous contributions in her capacity as a lawyer.

Senator Soliai complimented that Tauiliili Langkilde was a daughter that American Samoa is very proud of.

Committee Chairman Tuiagamoa told the new judge, while you are young, may your thoughts and decisions be filled with wisdom, adding that her new position is not an easy one,

Tauiliili Langkilde thanked the senators for their blessings and advice and assured that she will use the gifts from God to serve with honesty, justice and courage.
