Teachers are “struggling” to adapt to the new way of teaching as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Samoana High School teacher Sabrina Sulua’i-Mahuka, spoke on the many challenges faced by local educators in switching from traditional teaching to virtual classes in a webinar this week, with the theme “Teaching in a Pandemic.”
It was organized by the University for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and Act as One as part of their activities to celebrate teachers around the Globe.
Suluai-Mahuka, the territory’s 2021 Teacher of the Year said that in the summer of 2020 the American Samoa Department of Education conducted a technology institute for select teachers from most of the schools.
The teachers were expected to engage in frequent training throughout the school year and this continued for the summer of 2021, where the school’s technology team received in house orientation and training.
She said, with all of this came an exponential amount of pressure for teachers to switch gears.
